Wrestling Division Assignments
2025/2026
D1
Hamtramck– D2 to D1
Implications: Only one team moved from D2 to D1 and that is the 1959 little league world series champion Hamtramck. The Cosmos didn’t qualify anyone to regionals, so this move won’t affect much in D2 or D1. Hastings, with enrollment of 802 will continue to wrestle in D1 where they have been a solid presence. Also on the list of teams opting up is Waterford Kettering. Lowell is also 21 students away from D1 which could make things interesting in D1 and D2 if they ever dip into D1 again.
Muskegon Reeths Puffer made the cut into D1 by one student, Dexter by 3, and Muskegon High made it by 15.
D2
Marquette dropped to D2 from D1
Northview–Dropped to D2 from D1
Portland–D3 to D2
Williamston– D3 to D2
Implications: Marquette and Northview won’t affect much of the landscape by switching divisions, but the same can’t be said of Portland and Williamston. Portland lost by three in Division 3 team districts to final four finisher Lakewood. They are a strong team and D3 just opened up a bit both in team and individual. They return eight regional qualifiers and five state placers so look for them to be a major player in D2. Branlun Simon (2nd), Landon Lanz (3rd), and Brad Myers (4th) return to pace the team. Williamston is another powerhouse that was an eyelash away from a regional championship themselves. They also return eight regional qualifiers, five state qualifiers and two state placers. D2 and D3 are both going to be impacted by these two teams moving up.
Willamston made D2 by one student, while Three Rivers and Freeland continue to hang out just barely in D2 by 14 students. Romulus is opting up to D2 with an enrollment of 502.
D3
Blissfield—D4 to D3
Bronson–D4 to D3
Delton Kellogg D4 to D3
LakeVille D4 to D3
Pigeon Laker D4 to D3
Leslie D4 to D3
Rudyard - D4 to D3 (Co-Op with Brimley)
River Valley- D4 to D3 (Co-Op with New Buffalo)
TC St Francis D4 to D3
Pinckney - D2 to D3
Pennfield - D2 to D3
Implications: There is no shortage of implications here! LakeVille, Bronson, and Leslie jump off of the page as D4 powerhouses that are coming to shake things up in D3. LakeVille was in D3 two years ago and did well, but this is clearly a program on the rise and we expect them to contend for a regional championship in D3 as well. Two years ago, they lost by two to Yale in team districts. That already very tough area in D3 just got significantly tougher. Defending 165 pound state champion Fred Hammond will look to claim the D3 championship after taking 3rd at 165 in D3 two years ago.
Bronson returns six regional qualifiers as well as three state placers in Layne Knisely (3rd), Connor Harvey (5th), and Gabriel Erwin (7th). They are always a tough out in team and individual and will give added competition to D3 in SW Michigan. Leslie was terrific last year, falling to Hudson in the regional finals. They did graduate state champion Tanner Craft, but return eight regional qualifiers and two state placers, led by Grason Weber (4th). They were a young team who will make noise in D3.
Delton Kellogg returns four regional qualifiers including 3rd in state 285 in Mitchell Swift. There is a 9th grade Ferris who will surprise nobody if he develops into an upper weight phenom. Blissfield returns three outstanding state placers in Gage Rothman (3rd), Jude Rosas (4th), and Remy Yanakeff (4th). The Royals made the cut to D3 by one student.
Pennfield returns one state qualifier in Aiden Babick, but the dropping of Pennfield and Pinckney to D3 won’t shift the landscape much.
D4
Coloma - D3 to D4
Martin and Climax/Scotts no longer a co-op
Implications: The big story is Martin and Climax no longer combining teams. Martin/Climax-Scotts has been a D4 power for years and it will be interesting to see how strong each team can remain on its own. There has been great wrestling and terrific coaching and I still expect strength, but they can’t possibly be as strong as they were together. Nothing will change from an individual perspective, unless they are placed in different districts and/or regions and then things would change a little.
Coloma feels like a team on the rise and they have current freshman phenom Brody Ashley who finished 55-3 and 3rd in the state. Branlun Simon, Brody Ashley, Danny VanEeckhoutte, and Ayden Ringler gave us a very entertaining 106 last year and now Ashley and Simon are leaving D3. Coloma returns an additional state qualifier in Joe Clayton (190), as well as standouts Brody Winnell (40-9) and Maverick Kramer (32-14). They will be a team to watch in D4.
Constantine missed D4 by nine students and if they ever drop, that would shake things in SW Michigan as well as statewide.
